Organic Traffic
Visits arriving from unpaid search results, conventionally the headline measure of whether SEO is working.
Organic traffic is the count of sessions from unpaid search. It is the standard headline number, and it is a reasonable one provided it is read at the level of segments rather than as a single line — branded and non-branded traffic behave differently, and a total that hides the split can rise while acquisition falls.
It has been getting harder to read. AI summaries and features that answer the query on the results page mean a query can be served without a visit, so impressions can grow while sessions flatten. Treating that pattern as a failure, when it may be a change in how the answer is delivered, leads to the wrong response.
The honest supplement is to pair it with what happens after arrival. Traffic that does not convert is a vanity number, and a smaller volume of correctly qualified visits is the better outcome in almost every commercial context.
