Answer Engine

A system that responds to a question with a synthesised answer rather than a list of documents to read.

An answer engine returns a response, not a search result. Perplexity, ChatGPT with browsing, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode all work this way: the query is interpreted, sources are retrieved, and a single composed answer comes back with citations attached.

The consequence for a business is a narrower shortlist. A results page offers ten options and lets the reader choose; an answer names two or three and the rest are invisible. Being outside that set is closer to not existing than to ranking eleventh.

It also changes what a page needs to do. There may be no visit at all, so the page’s job shifts from converting a reader to being the most quotable, most verifiable source on the question — which rewards clear structure and checkable claims over persuasion.
